Age 9 years (almost 10) Mikyla lives with her parents, sister and baby brother in a small country town in Victoria. She attends both a special school and a regular school with the help of an aide. She is mobile and speaks well enough for others to understand her basic needs and wants. Mikyla has a beautiful dog called Hunter who is being trained as a companion and assistant for her. Animals who are trained to assist people with disabilities to lead a more independent life are called "service animals" in some countries. Hunter will be trained to keep an eye on Mikyla at home and at her regular school since she tends to wander off if not closely supervised. |
